Free Editor is mainly a document editor (for DOCX, DOC, XLS, TXT and other such files) but it also includes a hex editor, a resource editor (for adding/removing/altering resources found in EXE or DLL files) and other basic editing features for images and other types of documents. The application is also able to open many kinds of files like RAR archives, AVI clips, PDFs and so on.

Unfortunately, the installer of this piece of software is very intrusive: it starts installing .NET Framework 3.5 and video codecs without asking for permission and without allowing you to cancel the action. It also creates file associations without asking for any kind of permission. Although the installing process creates a bad first impression, the second impression is a good one. The program’s interface has a clean look, it is well organized and the icons used on the toolbars are very intuitive. All these details make the application very easy to use.

Sadly, the Resource Editor and Hex Editor are the tools that impress the most and show the most complexity out of everything this utility includes. The problem is that this product is presented as being, in the first case, a document editor for office files but in this area it has the least potential, enabling for simple text formatting and adding/modifying tables. To make matters even worse, this app doesn’t even let you create a new document. It only allows opening and editing existing ones. more

Thanks for saving me the waste of time. I wanted something that could embed images and do columns.
